Head Coach Owen Dawkins and his women’s wrestling team enter the 2007-08 season full of optimism. The Wolves see the return of a few very talented veterans and this year also sees a large group of very talented freshmen recruits. The addition of five-time OUA and CIS national champioin Jamie Macari to the coaching staff will also be an incredible boost to the training of the lighter weight categories.
Women’s Wrestling Preview
This year’s women’s squad is almost an entirely new one from the last two years. However, with OUA Women’s Wrestler of the Year, Tasha Eady (2005 world Junior Bronze medalist) returning; the young Wolves will have a proven and experienced leader.
Leah Dougherty, who is last year’s OUA silver medalist, is looking to improve on that finish this year. Last year’s OUA Rookie of the year, Nicole Plummer, is eager to prove that she is for real. Nicole had an incredible freshman season last year; OUA champion, Ontario Junior Championship, Canadian Junior Champion, and CIS Championship Bronze. Look for Nicole to turn that CIS Bronze medal in to a gold medal this year.
This year’s rookie class is also a very talented one; led by Emma Brightwell, last year’s national and provincial Juvenile champion, national and provincial silver medalist, OFSSA Champion, and Junior Pan American champion. Emma is also the daughter of former Canadian Champion and Canadian Olympian Wayne Brightwell.
Other talented freshmen to watch are Jessica Bershatsky, last year’s OFSSA silver medalist, Brigitta Balog, Juvenile provincial silver medalist and OFSSA silver medalist, and Thunder Bay native Jenna Panontin who was OFSSA champion. Also look for Laurel Knowels from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to turn a few heads this year.
