Five Wolves Get OAWA Carding

November 5th, 2007

Lakehead varsity wrestling and Head Coach Owen Dawkins are very proud to announce that five Thunderwolves wrestlers have been awarded Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association carding as part of the Quest For Gold initiative.
The five wresters are David Rector a fifth year senior Education student from Waterford, Ontario, Corey Lee a sophomore Electrical Engineering student from Lasalle, Ontario, Josh Schug, a sophomore General Arts student from High River, Alberta, Nicole Plummer, a sophomore Business Administration student from Windsor, Ontario, and Emma Brightwell, a freshman Outdoor Recreation student from Guelph, Ontario.  Steve Gros was selected a first alternate for the program.
Being carded means that each wrestler gets funding for the OAWA with the funding going towards either school or training costs.  This support eases the financial load on student athletes and assists them in their studies and training.  The Quest For Gold program’s goal is to get Ontario athletes onto national and Olympic teams.
Coach Dawkins says the carding is a big step for each of these wrestlers.   “For five Lakehead athletes to receive this carding is a testament to our program’s growth in strength and numbers.   In the coming year I expect to see this number increase.”
