Wrestling Teams are Athletes of the Week!
This week’s Lakehead Athletes of the Week selections are a break from tradition as the selectees are not individual athletes, but two teams; the men’s and women’s wrestling teams. Lakehead’s teams went to the OUA Championships, hosted by the University of Western Ontario, with rosters hampered by injuries.
The men’s team took 10 athletes and the women took 7 wrestlers to the Championships. And the results were exceptional. The men’s team won 4 individual silvers and 3 bronze while the women won 3 silver and 2 bronze. The men’s team placed second behind Champions Brock and the women’s team placed third behind Brock and Western.
The three medallists in each weight class automatically qualify for the CIS Championships so that means that Lakehead’s 12 medal winners all qualified for the Nationals in March. Only Brock qualified more, with 13 wrestlers. 16 of the 17 Lakehead wrestlers finished in the Top 4, which was the most at the Championships, with Brock next at 15. Lakehead’s only placing out of the Top 4 was a fifth place showing for the men. And that fifth place finisher won his fifth place match in a Sudden Death overtime match to give Lakehead the single point they needed for silver in the team’s standings.
So, this week Lakehead Athletics would like to congratulate both the men’s and women’s wrestling teams as its Athletes of The Week for an exceptional effort.
