The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s and women’s wrestling teams head to Calgary, Alberta this Friday and Saturday for the CIS National Championships hosted by the University of Calgary.

The Wolves head into the championships full of optimism; with the men’s squad sending a contingent of 10 wrestlers and the women bringing five.

Lakehead Head Coach Owen Dawkins said that his men's team is very capable of becoming national champions this weekend.  “We will need to have some excellent performances from both our seniors and rookies for us to beat nine-time CIS champions Brock. It’s going to be a hard but I feel our men's team is up to the challenge and are ready and capable of dethroning the unbeatable Brock Bagers.  Who will come out on top when the dust clears on Saturday afternoon?  The answer is simple, whoever wants it the most.  Our women's team, small in numbers but huge in heart, will be in tough against CIS champions Calgary and CIS runners-up SUF.  However look for some strong performance from Wolves like Tasha Eady and Nicole Plummer.”

Lakehead’s men, ranked No. 2 in the CIS, have a wrestler in all 10 weight categories in the nationals; more than any other team.

However the Brock Badgers, the No. 1 team in Canada and defending CIS champions, have eight men wrestling this weekend and six of them were gold medalists at the OUA championships so Lakehead will need to bring their A game to unseat the Badgers.

In the individual rankings, on the men’s side; Lakehead’s Mitch Fryia is ranked No. 1 at 68 kg while Huy Nguyen (54 kg), Corey Lee (82 kg), and Darren Manion (130 kg) are all ranked No. 3.  All of Lakehead’s 10 men are ranked in the Top 5 at least in each of their weight categories.

Chris Camarata will look to better his silver medal performance at last year’s nationals while Andrew Elliot and Corey Lee will look to improve their bronze medals won at last year’s CIS championships.

The women’s individual rankings sees the Wolves Leah Daugherty ranked No. 4 at 59 kg, Nicole Plummer No. 5 at 82 kg, Jessica Bershatsky No. 6 at 42 kg, and Tasha Eady No. 7 at 67 kg.

The Wolves women have strong prospects and senior Tasha Eady will look to better her bronze medal from last year’s nationals.  Sophomore Nicole Plummer, OUA gold medalist again this year, will also look to improve upon her bronze medal performance at last year’s nationals.

Live results of matches will be available via the championship website at http://www.cisport.ca/e/championships/wrestling/2008/index.cfm.

The bronze medal and championship matches will be video webcast LIVE on Saturday, March 1. The live webcasts will be available through the University of Calgary campus TV station’s website at www.nutv.ca/streaming.
