Perfect Wolves Men Off to Quarterfinals

March 15th, 2008

The Lakehead Thunderwolves men's curling squad finished round robin play with a perfect 6-0 record as the Wolves notched two wins Friday at the CIS-Canadian Curling Association National University Curling Championships Friday in Guelph and Elora, Ontario.
The men defeated Brandon University 7-6 in their afternoon Day 3 round-robin game and then got by Laurentian University by the same 7-6 score in the early evening draw.  The Wolves finish round robin play at the top of Pool C.  Lakehead's men await the results of the final morning draw Saturday to see who their quarter-final playoff opponent will be Saturday night at 5:30 pm EST.
The Lakehead women also picked up a 7-5 win over Brandon in their afternoon game but then lost 8-2 against Queen’s in their night match.  The women end round robin play with a 2-4 record in Pool A.
Men's coach Ken Ketonen said his team keeps finding ways to win.   “It was another nail biter against Laurentian which came down to last rock; which seems to be the modus operandi for our team; winning five games by a combined total of seven points. We want to keep the momentum going so we will have to find something to keep the boys occupied until the first round of the playoffs tomorrow.”
Women's coach Glen Fossum said his squad played much more consistently Friday.  “The girls played a very consistent game against Brandon and after Liane's (Skip Liane Fossum) terrific draw in the second end to limit to one; then they took charge of the game and never looked back.  They executed four perfect peels in the eighth end to preserve the victory.  It is fortunate that we brought a fifth player as Shana Ketonen has not been able to play due to an injury.  She will have an x-ray tonight to determine the extent of the injury.”
