The Lakehead Thunderwolves men's and women's varsity wrestling teams will be travelling to Guelph, Ontario to participate in the Ontario Senior Wrestling Championships. This competion is for all athletes above the age of 19 and the Wolves look to put in some strong showings.
Head Coach Owen Dawkins says that this meet is a good measuring stick of the Wolves mid-term progress. “The Ontario Senior Wrestling Championships are a great way to end the first half of the long varsity wrestling season. This tournament will be a great test for our men's and women's teams and a good staging point for the run to the OUA and CIS championships.”
The Wolves will be sending seven men and five women to the championships. Last year Lakehead captured one gold, one silver, five bronzes, and two fourths. Coach Dawkins is sending a lot of his younger wrestlers as well to get some more seasoning against tough competition.
Last season, Leah Daugherty took silver in the most competitive weight class on the women’s side; the 59kg class and this year she will compete in the 63 kg class. On the men’s side; Corey Lee returns to the Ont. Seniors where he took bronze last year at 84kg. This year he will compete at 74 kg.
