Torfason and Proulx Medal at Brock Open
January 10th, 2009

The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s wrestling team did something it hasn’t done in quite some time; take the men’s team title at the Brock Open Saturday in St. Catharines, Ontario; and beating the host Brock Badgers on their home mats in the process.
Brock will also be the site of this year’s OUA championships so the win at the Brock Open will give the Wolves some confidence heading into the championships later this year. It wasn’t a dominant team victory by any means; as the Wolves narrowly got by the Badgers by 6 points for the team title; with Guelph coming in third.
Lakehead’s men captured four golds (57kg Gaston Tardif, 76kg Corey Lee, 90kg Ben Eagelestone, 130kg Jason Chalifoux), two silvers (65kg Scott Christian, 72kg Chadd Lee), two bronzes (54kg Stephan Gross, 82kg Colten Woznow) and one fourth place from Brandon Gardner at 68 kg.
Not to be forgotten are the fantastic results of the Lakehead women. The Wolves only sent three women; but they still managed to place third overall as a team; taking a gold and a silver medal and freshman sensation Aislynn Torfason (who won gold at 59 kg) was named Female MVP of the meet. Katelyn Proulx took silver at 72 kg.
Lakehead Head Coach Dawkins says the men wrestled well, but that the squad was still a month away from being able to challenge the powerhouse Badgers for an OUA championship. “I am pleased with the way the men and women wrestled this weekend, however, as a team our goal isn't to win the Brock Open championship but to win the OUA championships and we’ve still got a ways to go for that. This tournament will serve as a great confidence builder for our men's team, you can’t really ask for a better way to start off the New Year, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
