This weekend the Thunderwolves men's and women's varsity wrestling teams are sending a small but strong contingent to the annual Guelph Open meet in Guelph, Ontario. The Wolves will be taking a team of four men and three women to this year’s Open; all competing against top varsity and club wresters as well as competing for valuable wrestling carding points.
The men’s team will be Angelo Daniele, Chadd Lee, Colten Woznew, and Jason Chalifoux while the women’s squad is made up of Alex Demars, Aislynn Torfason, and Emma Brightwell.
At last year’s Guelph Open, super sophomore Brightwell had a great meet; capturing gold in the 72 kg weight class and she hopes to repeat that achievement at Guelph this year.
Freshman sensation Torfason is coming off a big a tourney MVP and gold medal winning performance at the Brock Open as well as a silver medal at the Ontario Senior championships.
For the men; Chalifoux is coming off a gold medal performance at the Brock Open, Chadd Lee took silver at the Brock Open and Woznew took bronzes at the Ontario Seniors and the Brock Open.
Lakehead Head Coach Owen Dawkins said his squad will face top level opposition this weekend at this very challenging meet. “The Guelph Open has long been considered one of the hardest wrestling tournaments in Canada. This tournament has a mix of varsity and club wrestlers who are wrestling for valuable carding points. This tournament will be a great test for our wrestlers and will be the last tune up tournament for most of our men's and women's varsity teams.”
