The Lakehead Thunderwolves men's and women's wrestling teams put in great performances at the OUA Wrestling Championships on Saturday in St. Catharines, Ontario with the menís team placing second in the team standings with four gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals and the womenís team placing third in the team standings with one gold, two silvers, and two bronze. Lakehead's Huy Nguyen was named the Outstanding Male Wrestler of the championships (MVP).
The host Brock Badgers repeated as both the menís and womenís OUA team champions; the Brock men for an astounding 15th straight time.
Taking gold for the Lakehead men were Huy Nguyen at 54 kg, Gaston Tardiff at 57 kg, Chad Lee at 72 kg, and freshman Ben Eaglestone at 90 kg. Taking gold for the Wolves women was sophomore Emma Brightwell at 82 kg.
Silver medalists for the Wolves were Clayton Serreres (65 kg), Colten Woznow (82 kg), Corey Lee (76 kg) on the menís side and Jessica Bershatsky (48 kg) and Leah Daugherty (59 kg) for the women.
Gold medalists are OUA First Team All Stars and Silver Medalists are OUA Second Team All Stars.
Bronze medalists for the men were Jason Chalifoux (130 kg) and Angelo Daniele (61 kg) while Aislynn Torfason (63 kg) and Alex Demars (55 kg) took bronze for the women.
Brandon Gardiner was fourth at 68 kg for the men while Katelyn Proulx was fourth at 72 kg for the women and Kendra Ezack was fifth at 67 kg.
All OUA medalists qualify for the upcoming CIS National Championships in Calgary so the Wolves will be sending nine men and six women to the event being hosted by the University of Calgary.
