The Lakehead Thunderwolves wrestling teams head to the CIS national championships this Friday and Saturday in Calgary, Alberta; hosted by the University of Calgary. Lakehead will be sending a contingent of nine men and five women to the championships.
Lakehead’s men are coming off an OUA second place finish to Brock as the Wolves collected 9 medals at the OUA championships; four golds, three silvers, and two bronzes. Last year at the nationals; Lakehead placed third behind Brock and Simon Fraser and Head Coach Owen Dawkins and his team are hoping to improve on that result this year.
This year’s nationals sees Brock, Concordia, and Simon Fraser sending 10 wrestlers on the men’s side, Lakehead 9, UNB 8, and Alberta, Regina, and Saskatchewan 6 apiece.
Two-time and defending CIS champion Huy Nguyen (54 kg) is expected to lead the Lakehead charge as he is looking for his third national title. Nguyen was named the Outstanding Male Wrestler of the OUA Championships (MVP) where he took gold.
Gaston Tardiff (57 kg), brothers Chadd (72 kg) and Corey Lee (76 kg), and Colten Woznew (82 kg) will look to improve upon last year’s nationals results while newcomers Angelo Daniele (61 kg), Benjamin Eaglestone (90 kg), and Jason Chalifoux (130 kg) will look to make some noise as well. 2007 CIS silver medalist Clayton Serreres (65 kg) could also be a factor this weekend.
Lakehead’s women placed third at the OUA championships; with one gold, two silvers, and two bronze. Lakehead was fifth at last year’s nationals in the team standings. OUA champion and national junior champion sophomore Emma Brightwell is looking to do well in the 82 kg weight class for the Wolves women.
Lakehead is also looking for strong results from OUA silver medalists Leah Dougherty (59 kg) and Jessica Bershatsky (48 kg); both looking to improve up fifth and fourth place finishes at the nationals last year. Freshman Aislynn Torfason (63 kg) and Alex Demars (55 kg) could also surprise this weekend.
Lakehead Head Coach Owen Dawkins said he is looking for his squads to wrestle the meet of their lives. “Our men's team are in tough when it comes to winning a national championship. As a team they they will all have to wrestle the tournament of their lives, and we are more than capable of doing that. Seniors such as Huy Nguyen, and Clayton Serreres will be pivotal when it comes to fighting for a national title; their leadership and experience will be the key factor in helping our men's team achieve their goal of a national banner. Our women's team is young; however they possess a great deal of talent. Look for freshmen Aislynn Torfason to turn some heads. Emma Brightwell in her first CIS championship will be a force to reckon with.”
