Karl Subban: Lakehead Legend
Subban twice led Lakehead in scoring (1982-83: 17.03 ppg/1983-83: 15.19 ppg) and averaged 13.63 ppg during his Lakehead career. He was named Team MVP in 1980-81 and co-MVP in 1982-83. He played for Lakehead at the time of fellow Lakehead Legends David and John Zanatta.
Subban said playing basketball at Lakehead at this time was a great experience. “My years at Lakehead University were the best time of my life.”
Subban is the principal of Brookview Middle School in Toronto while his wife Maria is a bank quality control analyst. He has been in Education for 23 years in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and eighteen years as a school administrator. This year; Subban was one of nine recipients honoured with a Bob Marley Day Award in Toronto.
Oldest son and middle child Pernell Karl or ‘PK’ is a star defenseman for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and helped lead the Canadian Junior National Team to two world championships. He was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.
Subban said playing basketball and studying at Lakehead helped prepare him for the success he has had in later life. “I had five successful years at Lakehead University where I learned some valuable life skills and developed my leadership qualities. The positive environment at Lakehead prepared me not only for my success but to thrive in this new world.”
