Graduate Profiles: Leah Dougherty

Leah Dougherty has been one of the cornerstones of the Lakehead women’s wrestling team for the past four seasons.  Not on did she excel on the wrestling mat; she also shone in the classroom and led her teammates by example on both fronts.
 
On the mats; Dougherty won four consecutive OUA silver medals in four seasons; garnering OUA Second Team All Star Status each year.  She also qualified for the CIS national championships in each of her four seasons; and placed fifth in the nation the last three seasons and sixth in 2006.
 
Academically, Dougherty was a superb student who earned Academic All Canadian status in her first three seasons and will qualify for this honour again this season.  She will leave Lakehead with a degree in Psychology.
 
She will also leave belonging to a very elite group of graduating Lakehead student-athletes; namely being a Lakehead varsity athlete who earned Academic All Canadian honurs in every one of their seasons of varsity competition.   
 
Lakehead Head Coach Owen Dawkins said Dougherty was a model of what a student-athlete should be.  “Leah Dougherty, while maintaining a grade point average of 82%, managed to place second in the OUA’s four straight years.  Her presence on our women's varsity wrestling team will be greatly missed in the coming year.”

Q & A with Leah Dougherty:
 
1) What are your fondest memories as a Lakehead varsity athlete?
Fitness testing, dryland training, pyramids.

2) What do you think was your top athletic achievement or performance as a Lakehead Varsity Athlete? 
Pulling out a pin from a half nelson to qualify for CIS championships in my first year, and wrestling up two weight classes.  Also, scoring all those points on Huy (Lakehead men’s wrestler and CIS champion Huy Nguyen) in practice!

3) What did being a Lakehead varsity athlete teach you that will help you in your life after university?
Perseverance and the value of naps.
