Thunderwolves Invitational a success
The Lakehead Thunderwolves women's basketball team played host to three teams comprised of athletes from the high school and university levels this Friday and Saturday at the Lakehead Invitational at the C. J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay.
In the exhibition event, the Thunderwolves were joined by a Senior Women's All-Star team built with former CIS players, the Thunderwolves Junior Varsity team and the Hammarskjold HS Vikings.
Friday night, Hamarskjold played an impressive game, defeating the Senior Women's All-Star 45-42 with the Thunderwolves handling their JV counterparts 77-24.
On Saturday, Hammarskjold played another close game but fell 48-42 against the Thunderwolves JV team. In the late game, the Thunderwolves beat the Senior squad 90-47.
"This was a great weekend of basketball for Thunder Bay," said Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner. "For us, this was an opportunity to play on our home court and get everyone significant minutes in a game setting. Our rookies have been steadily developing and I am happy with how quickly they are learning.
For our JV club team, this was a great opportunity to get games and I thought red shirts Laura Gini played really well against us while Erin Duhaime and Tamara Duncan played well against Hammarskjold. Hammarskjold has been looking for competition and found it in two close games. Our senior women's team was happy to play and help out three strong programs; varsity, club and highschool."
Lakehead will open their 2009-10 regular season November 6 and 7 when they travel to Kingston, Ontario to play Queen's and RMC.
