Lakehead knocks off York to remain unbeaten

Another big fourth quarter was the difference as the Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team beat the York Lions, 89-76, Friday night at Toronto to improve their unblemished conference record to 5-0. The Wolves outscored the Lions 28-15 in the final frame to close out a game in which they trailed 41-37 at halftime.
With the win, Lakehead maintains their two-point lead in the OUA West Division over second place McMaster. The OUA East-leading Carleton Ravens are the conference’s only other undefeated team. York, meanwhile, drops to 1-4 and are seventh in the East.
Post Yoosrie Salhia led the Wolves with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end as Lakehead outrebounded York 39-26. Junior guard Cam Hornby added 16 points and three steals while point guard Greg Carter and freshman post Ryan Thomson each had 10 to round out a balanced team effort.
Vadim Razenberg and Dejan Kravic led the Lions with 16 points apiece while David Tyndale added 14.
Dramatic fourth quarters have defined the Wolves’ season thus far, as the team has outscored their opponents 124-71 in the final frame in 2009-10. Friday night’s game marked the fourth time in OUA play in which Lakehead has overcome a second half deficit to win.
Thunderwolves head coach Scott Morrison was please with his team’s effort after halftime.
“We’re happy with our increase in intensity on defence in the second half. I thought we came out flat on defence in the first half, but we made some halftime adjustments to come out with a good win.”
Lakehead will head up highway 69 to reprise their northern rivalry with the Laurentian Voyageurs, Saturday night at Sudbury. Tipoff goes at 8:00 p.m.
