Wolves perform well at Ontario Senior Championships
In their return to the mats, the Lakehead Thunderwolves wrestling team grabbed five podium places at the Ontario Senior Wrestling Championships at Barrie, led by a one-two finish by women’s wrestlers Emma Brightwell and Nicole Plummer. As a non-CIS competition, the Senior Championships featured competition in international weight classes as opposed to the usual collegiate weight classes.
Aislynn Torfason had the women’s squad’s other podium result, earning a second place in the 59 kg division.
On the men’s side Corey Lee led the way with a silver medal result in the 84 kg division after competing against several talented national level wrestlers. Brother Chadd was fifth while Dustin Helwig also finished fifth in his division.
Gaston Tardif had the Pack’s other top three finish as he earned a bronze position in the 55 kg division.
“I thought our team wrestled very well today,” says Thunderwolves head coach Brock Curtis. “In our men’s division, Corey Lee, in particular, competed very well again several national team calibre wrestlers. In the finals he wrestled very well against top competition and beat another national team member to reach that position.
Our women got some good results and it was nice to see Emma and Nicole earn the top two spots in their division.”
The Wolves will be on hiatus until January when they compete in the Brock Invitational.
