Jasper and Jones take Athlete of the Week honours
THUNDER BAY,
Ont. – Lakehead Athletics is pleased to recognize women’s Nordic skier Kara
Jaspers and men’s basketball player Joe Jones as Thunderwolves Athletes of the
Week for the week ending March 21, 2010.

A Thunder Bay
native, freshman Kara Jaspers closed her debut season in spectacular fashion,
finishing second overall at the CCUNC national championships, March 14-19 at
Whitehorse, Yukon as the Thunderwolves captured their seventh consecutive team
title. After finishing second in the 5 km classic and eighth in the 10 km skate,
Jaspers secured her team’s victory by winning the 1 km sprint on the final day
of competition, squeaking past Carleton’s Alana Thomas and Laval’s Catherine
Auclair by under half-of-a-second. Jaspers and teammate Anna Crawford were each
recognized as all-Canadians.
Joe Jones, Men’s Basketball
A sophomore
guard from Washington, D.C., Jones provided the Thunderwolves with a major
spark off the bench in their first trip to the CIS national basketball
championships since 1977. Jones scored 14 points in consecutive games at the
Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ontario to lead Lakehead in scoring over the course
of the tournament. Friday versus the UBC Thunderbirds Jones scored eight points
in a second quarter surge that pushed the ‘Wolves into a halftime lead,
demonstrating their ability to compete on the national level. His Saturday
encore earned him Lakehead player of the game honours against the Cape Breton
Capers.
