Lakehead, Bishops Nab Wins in 2nd Round of Tournament
The action at the Thunderdome continued to excite and entertain fans at
the Victoria Inn Invitational, with Bishops earning a win over Winnipeg
70-60, and Lakehead topped Laurentian 79-66.
In the first game, Bishops was victorious in a game that they led for a good part of, but could never completely deflate a pesky Winnipeg defense. The final score was 70-60 for Bishops. Leading the Gaiters were led by Jessy Roy with 12 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, followed by Katy Germain with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Winnipeg received a strong performance from Caitlin Gooch with 11 points and 3 rebounds, while Stephanie Kleyson added 9 points and 11 rebounds.
In the feature matchup of the evening, Lakehead had their back up against the wall early in the game, but received some welcome support from their bench, including Kaite Ulokovic, who finished the game with 5 points and 4 assists in all of 12 minutes floor time. She was awarded the player of the game for Lakehead for her timely efforts in the first half. Also leading Lakehead were Lindsay Druery with 19 points, and Lacey McNulty with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Tasia McKenna finished with 13 and 5. For Laurentian, Katie Goggins 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 helpers, while Lyndi Meloche chipped in 11 points and 3 rebounds.
Lakehead Coach Jon Kreiner:
"This was a great team win for us, we got 12 assists from our bench, Kaite and Corina [Bruni] really stepped up to give Tasia some help. For tomorrow, we're looking to improve our defense, rebounding, and overall toughness against a team we lost to last weekend, and with whom we are definitely looking to return the favor"
Action continues tomorrow in the AM, with Bishops and Laurentian playing at 10, followed by Lakehead and Winnipeg at noon.
