Lakehead Wrestling Finishes 3rd, 5th at GTA Open
Lakehead's wrestling program was on the road in Whitby this past weekend
at the Greater Toronto Area Open, and placed 3rd on the men's side,
while the LU women finished 5th. Top individual performances were
Aislynn Torfason, who won the 59kg weight class, and Colten Woznow took
2nd place in the 90kg division.
Lakehead women who finished in the top 6 in their respective weight
divisions were Jessica Bershatzky (4th, 51kg), Karleah
Bonk (5th, 63kg) and Alexi Kreps (6th, 55kg).
Other standout
Lakehead wrestlers on the mens' side included Gaston Tardif (3rd, 57kg),
Sam Driedger (3rd, 68kg), Scott Christians (4th, 72 Kg), Dustin Helwig
(5th, 57kg) and Nik Wilson (6th, 82 kg).
Lakehead coach Brock Curtis on the teams' performance:
"Everyone
wrestled well, but we all learned what we each need to work on... On
another note, it was great to see Colten back in the line up as this was
his first tournament back as a varsity wrestler since the CIS
Championships two years ago... I'm excited to see our team wrestle in
upcoming tournaments as I think if we continue to work on some little
details, we'll see a big difference in individual placings"
The Lakehead wrestling team will send a small group of athletes to
the New York Athletic Club Open November 20-22nd, with the next major
team competition being the Ontario Senior Championships the following
weekend, November 27-29, at Brock University in St. Catharines.
