Tardif and Plummer Hold Golden Hopes For Lakehead

February 25th, 2011

Author: Hugh Mullally

The action was fast and ferocious in the Thunderdome all day long Friday as wrestlers from across the country battled for CIS supremacy in the preliminary rounds of the CIS Wrestling Championships, presented by Bombardier. Action will continue all day tomorrow, beginning at 11 am. The hometown Thunderwolves have 11 wrestlers in action this weekend, 5 of which will have an opportunity tomorrow to capture a CIS medal. Leding the Pack will be Gaston Tardif (Thunder Bay, ON) and Nicole Plummer (Windsor, ON) who both will be wrestling for the gold medal in their divisions. Thunder Bay's own Alexi Kreps, Jason Bresele and Tardif all got lots of support from the hometown crowd, along with the rest of the LU squad, and look forward to hearing lots of local voices again tomorrow.

The point totaling system dictates that points toward the team's total are allotted together (male and female separately), with gold = 10 points, silver = 8 points, bronze = 6 points, 4th =5 points, 5th= 4 points, 6th = 3 points, 7th = 2 points and 8th = 1 point. Following this system, the team with the most points in the men's and women's respective divisions will capture the male and female championship banners.

On the women's side, Lakehead's 6 women wrestlers are as follows (Saturday match in parentheses):

  • Nicole Plummer, 82 kg (Gold medal match)

  • Aislynn Torfason, 59 kg (Bronze medal match)

  • Jessica Bershatsky, 48 kg (5th place match)

  • Alexi Kreps, 51 kg (5th place match)

  • Jes Smith, 55 kg (5th place match)

  • Karleah Bonk, 63 kg (5th place match)

  • Maximum potential female team points - 32

For the men, Lakehead's 5 male wrestlers are:

  • Gaston Tardif, 57 kg (Gold medal match)

  • Dustin Helwig, 54 kg (Bronze medal match)

  • Colten Woznow, 90 kg (Bronze medal match)

  • Jason Bresele, 68 kg (5th place match)

  • Trevor Steffler, 90-130 kg (7th place match)

  • Maximum potential male team points - 28
