Wolves Ready for OUAs

The Lakehead Thunderwolves' men's and women's wrestling teams head to Guelph, Ontario this weekend with the hopes of making some noise at the OUA Wrestling Championships.  The men's team enter the weekend ranked No. 2 in the CIS while the women are ranked No. 9.

The Lakehead men have had a very successful season so far; winning the McMaster Open, the Brock Open, and the University of Alberta Invitational, placed second at the Lakehead Duals, and third at the Western Open.  Brent Fryia is ranked No. 1 in the CIS at 61kg and will be one of the Lakehead men to watch at the OUA Championships.  Steve Raine and Dave Rector are both ranked No. 2, Trevor Manchester and Chris Camarata are No. 3, Clayton Sereres is No. 4, and Yasin Kaya is No. 6.

The men will be up against it against No. 1 ranked Brock who feature multiple defending CIS champions such as Jamie Macari.  Guelph (CIS No. 7), McMaster (No. 9), and Western also have strong teams. 

The young women's team has also scored some successes this season; taking the team title at the Western Open, third at the Brock Open, and fifth at the McMaster Open.  Melody McCague is ranked No. 5 in the CIS, Tasha Eady and Mary Jo Mitchell are No. 6, and Emily McCague and Sarah Swan are both ranked No. 7 in their weight classes. 

The women will be battling against top teams from Brock (CIS No. 3), Guelph (No. 6), Western (No. 7), and Mcmaster (No. 10) in the hunt for an OUA title.  

Lakehead Head Coach Francis Clayton said Lakehead should be competitive at the OUA championships.  "I think we're sending a good group to Guelph and our goal is to qualify as many as we can for the CIS Championships."
