League/Division Types

Open vs Co-Rec vs. Women/Non-Binary Divisions

Open – any sport labeled as “open” or that does not have any gender descriptors means that it does not have gender requirements for the on-court/on-field team. Examples of these leagues are Dodgeball and Kickball

Co-Rec – any sport labeled as “Co-Rec” means that the on-court/on-field/on-ice team must meet certain gender requirements. For example, Co-Rec basketball requires at least 2 of on the 5 players identify as female, at least 2 identify as male, and the 5th player can be of any gender identity.

Women/Non-Binary – any sport as a “women/non-binary” league means that any participants registering for this league must identify as women or non-binary to participate.

Competitive vs. Recreational Divisions

The majority of Lakehead Campus Rec Intramural Sports just have one division, and are not divided into competitive vs. recreational. However there are certain sports, due to the number of teams, that offer “Competitive” or “Recreational” divisions. To foster more evenly-matched games, teams will be self-assessing their team’s overall skill level upon their initial registration and registering for the appropriate division.

Our “Recreational” divisions are designed for teams that are composed of individuals with some skill and experience playing their respective sport, and have a priority to focus on fun! There is still a slight competitive nature to this league, however, teams are coming out every week to have fun, get active, and get social, without a major emphasis on winning the championship.

Our “Competitive” divisions are designed for teams who have a high level of skill and experience. These teams plan to take home the championship while still embodying the principles of sportsmanship and the Fair Play Code! This league has an emphasis on winning, and is recommended for teams with a high level of skill.

For sports with both Competitive & Recreational divisions, team placement is subject to discretion by Campus Recreation staff pending on skill level and number of teams in each division.

Campus Recreation retains the right to move teams between divisions at the discretion of our office staff. Please note, regardless of division type, Campus Recreation has no tolerance for overly aggressive behaviour and play (physical or verbal). Teams or individuals who are playing in an aggressive style will receive a low sportsmanship score, and can be removed from games and/or the league at the discretion of Campus Recreation staff.
