Volleyball - Women's
Thunderwolves Develop Young Talent
Every year we strive to assist in the growth and development of
Volleyball in our community and surrounding region. This year we have
run 2 Jr. aged tournaments for both Boys and Girls with 12 teams in
each, as well as assisted many teams with their practices. We have held
a successful 1st ever Coaches seminar which helped in the development
and growth of 50 coaches.
" I am extremely proud of my athletes for their
willingness to get up early Saturday and assist me with the promotion
of our team, University and and community. This is a great chance to
work with our local athletes to promote the game. I thank the parents
of Manitouwadge and of course their coach, Ted Lalonde, who is always
looking for ways to help his athletes, for their time and efforts to
let us be apart of their athletes lives."
After the weekend encounter with the Western
Mustangs, which saw the first annual "Breast Defense", Breast Cancer
awareness campaign and 2 High school Matches ( Jr- Manitouwadge vs
Hammarsjold and Sr Girls: St. Pats vs St. Ignatius), along with
Fundraising for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society, the Thunderwolves
continued their develoment locally with a regional team, the
Manitouwadge Wolverines.
After playing a feature match the night before
against Hammarskjold, Manitouwadge stayed in town to watch the match
between the Thunderwolves and Mustangs as guests of the Women's
Volleyball team.
Saturday Morning the 12 athletes and 2 coaches came into the CJ
Sanders Fieldhouse for a 2.5 hour clinic and some Volleyball action
against the Thunderwolf Women's team.
The
athletes were treated to 6 stations each of which lasted 25 minute.
After each 25 minutes they rotated to learn a different skill taught by
the LU Women's Volleyball Team. The athletes were taught many of the
same skills through drills as the LU women work on everyday, covering
Bumping, Setting, Attack, Blocking, Serving and Defense.
The morning was capped off with scrimmages where
Manitouwadge was split into 2 teams of 6 and competed in 25 point sets
against LU womens teams of Sara Reid, Sonja Wolski, and Jorie Daymond
and the second team of Michelle Cournoyer, Tessa Mendel, and Morgan
Lowe.
It was a great morning and a great way for the ladies to help out with the young athletes in our region.
We look forward to this concept again in the future.
